Melbourne’s Hot Sauce with a Fiery Passion for Sustainability

Thousand Apologies, a Melbourne hot sauce company has a commitment to flavour and sustainability. Founded by Rita Kanji, Thousand Apologies has been awarded an organisation Sustainability Award.

Prioritising Flavour & Planet

Thousand Apologies’ hot sauces are crafted using premium, locally sourced chillies. They pair these fiery peppers with unique Australian natives, creating a range of flavour profiles from mild to mind-blowing. What truly sets them apart, however, is their unwavering dedication to sustainability.

Championing Circularity: From Farm to Bottle and Back Again

Thousand Apologies embraces the concept of a circular economy, minimising waste throughout their production process. Leftover ingredients find new life through composting, while sourcing ingredients locally reduces carbon emissions associated with transportation. Their commitment extends beyond the farm. The hot sauces are housed in glass bottles – a classic material that’s infinitely recyclable. They are also handily designed in a shape and size that fits well in handbags and pockets.

For customers who want to go the extra mile (or kilometre!) for the environment, Thousand Apologies operates a reuse program. Customers can simply return used bottles to a designated drop-off point, and they’ll sterilise and refill them, giving the glass a second life.

Sustainable Packaging: From Cradle to Cradle (or Compost Heap!)

It’s not just the bottles that are eco-friendly. The labels are printed with compostable inks and a safe, non-toxic adhesive. Even the packaging itself is a testament to their commitment. Made from recycled, FSC-certified materials, the packaging is printed with organic water and pigment-based inks. The result? Fully compostable or recyclable labels, keeping waste out of landfill.

Minimising the Footprint, Maximising the Impact

Thousand Apologies doesn’t stop there. They minimise printed marketing materials, opting for 100% Australian-made, recycled paper certified Carbon Neutral when necessary. They choose Sendle for deliveries, a carbon-neutral service that ensures their fiery concoctions reach doorsteps with a minimal environmental impact.

A Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Thousand Apologies is leading the way in environmentally responsible food production, as a mission-driven business dedicated to leaving a positive impact.

“As our business expands and adapts, we’re devoted to capturing every chance to leave our planet better than we found it.”

– Rita Kanji, Thousand Apologies

“In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, Thousand Apologies is leading the way by considering the potential impact from every stage of their business and designing it in a way that avoids harm to the planet. By recognising and celebrating those who are leading the charge, we hope to raise the bar and inspire others to create a more sustainable future.”
