The Dark Island Soap Co., a Scotland-based business renowned for its luxurious and eco-friendly soaps, has been honoured with an Organisation Sustainability Award, recognising their exceptional commitment to environmental responsibility. This accolade highlights the company’s remarkable efforts in sustainability, transparency, and the creation of organic, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free products.

At the heart of The Dark Island Soap Co.’s ethos lies a dedication to protecting the planet while offering premium skincare products. As a plastic-free, Net Zero business, the company ensures that every order placed on their website contributes to global reforestation efforts. Since July 2023, they have planted nearly 1,400 trees worldwide through Tree Nation, with one tree planted for every retail order and ten for every wholesale order.
Their soaps are crafted using at least 90% certified organic ingredients, and the business prioritises natural materials such as sisal, hemp, loofah, and bamboo for bathing accessories. This commitment extends to their packaging, which is compostable, biodegradable, and entirely plastic-free unless repurposed from received stock.

The Dark Island Soap Co. recently garnered the Plastic Free Champion Award by Surfers Against Sewage, underscoring their steadfast dedication to eliminating single-use plastics. This award adds to an impressive list of other sustainability related awards and accolades which recognise their meticulous sourcing of ingredients, focus on biodegradable products and packaging, and adherence to rigorous sustainability standards.
Each soap is handmade using the traditional cold process method, blending organic natural oils, unrefined shea butter, and essential oils. This process results in rich, nourishing bars that are not only effective but also sustainable. With locally sourced ingredients where possible, The Dark Island Soap Co. reduces its environmental footprint while supporting regional suppliers.

Chiara MacLellan, the artistic creator and owner of The Dark Island Soap Co., brings a unique blend of craftsmanship and healing to her business. Originally from Edinburgh and now living in Stirlingshire, Chiara’s journey began with a business diploma in soap making. As a self-taught soap maker and certified Reiki practitioner, she channels her passion for natural wellness into every bar of soap. Her dedication to sustainability stems from her late father, whose connection to the Outer Hebrides—the “Dark Island”—inspires the company’s mission and charitable efforts.

The Dark Island Soap Co. goes beyond creating exceptional products by actively supporting environmental charities, particularly in the Western Isles of Scotland. Their efforts to give back are a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact locally and globally.
