Big Vibes Day Wins 2025 Organisation Sustainability Award for Responsible Rashguards

Big Vibes Day has won a 2025 Organisation Sustainability Award, recognising their exceptional commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the beachwear fashion sector.

Big Vibes Day, an Australian owned and operated company, has developed a standout product line of UPF50+ beach rashguards that prioritise the health of people and the planet. Rashguards, or “rashies” as they’re known in Australia, are durable waterproof shirts worn for surfing or swimming which protect skin against rashes caused by rubbing against a surfboard, and the sun.

Their garments are made using Carvico Vita, a high-performance Italian fabric produced from ECONYL® regenerated nylon — a material sourced entirely from pre- and post-consumer waste such as discarded fishing nets, industrial plastic, and fabric scraps recovered from landfills and the ocean.

Each garment is crafted in small, tightly controlled batches, sometimes as few as 10 units per design, allowing Big Vibes Day to respond to demand without contributing to the vast volumes of surplus garments common in the fashion industry. This slow fashion model directly reduces textile waste and overproduction.

Manufacturing is completed locally in Melbourne, Australia, by a partner that is accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and minimal environmental impact. This localised production model also significantly reduces the brand’s carbon footprint.

In addition to sustainable production, Big Vibes Day uses 100% recycled and recyclable packaging materials, and ships exclusively using a carbon-neutral courier service.

The performance of their products is another reason for their recognition. Compared to many competitor fabrics, Carvico Vita offers:

  • 50% higher resistance to fibre breakage
  • Superior resistance to chlorine, sunscreen, and oils
  • Longer garment life, meaning fewer replacements and lower environmental cost over time

These attributes contribute directly to a reduction in landfill waste, as customers can wear Big Vibes Day rashguards for years without deterioration in quality or sun protection.

“Big Vibes Day is raising the bar for what sustainable fashion and beachwear can and should be,” says Anna Chatburn, founder of the Organisation Sustainability Award. “Their approach is not only environmentally conscious but evidence-based — from their choice of Carvico Vita fabric made from ocean waste, to their transparent, low-waste production cycle. What also stood out was the sensory and functional quality of the garments: they are incredibly soft, smooth to the touch, and visibly built to last. These are not throwaway rashies — they’re designed with purpose and integrity.”

Further differentiators include:

  • UPF50+ sun protection rating, protecting wearers against 98% of harmful UV rays
  • Locally made, supporting the Australian garment industry
  • Collaborations only with fellow sustainable businesses
  • Transparent sourcing and traceability of all materials
  • Ongoing education around sustainable living and slow fashion on their platforms

Big Vibes Day is not only delivering high-quality, stylish beachwear — they are creating a model for how fashion brands can take genuine, measurable action in reducing their environmental and social impact.
