In the rolling hills of Stirlingshire, Scotland, lies the heart of The Dark Island Soap Co., a testament to one woman’s dedication to sustainability, tradition, and the memory of her beloved father. Chiara MacLellan, the founder, has woven a narrative that blends her Hebridean and Irish heritage with a deep respect for the Earth, resulting in a business that has garnered widespread acclaim, including consecutive Sustainability Awards in 2024 and 2025.

A Journey of Healing and Heritage
Chiara’s journey began with a profound loss. In 2022, she mourned the passing of her father, Donald MacLellan, who hailed from Lochboisdale, South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides—a place fondly referred to as “The Dark Island.” This loss ignited a desire within Chiara to honor her father’s memory and embark on a new, meaningful path.
“My father was a businessman himself,” Chiara reflects, “and The Dark Island was a place of cherished memories. I wanted to create something that would keep his spirit alive.”
This desire, combined with Chiara’s long-held interest in natural healing, led her to explore the art of traditional soap making. She immersed herself in learning, completing a business diploma in cold process soap making and delving into the world of herbalism and botanical infusions. Additionally, she became a certified Reiki practitioner, further deepening her connection to holistic well-being.
The Birth of The Dark Island Soap Co.
From her home in Stirlingshire, Chiara began crafting cold process soaps using certified organic natural oils and raw, unrefined organic shea butter. This traditional method, which involves saponification, ensures that the soaps retain their natural glycerin, leaving skin nourished and moisturized.
